In Chapter 10 the Christians are concerned with abstaining from food offered to Idols. The Apostle Paul will make the case for not being concerned with what goes in to the mouth but rather with what comes out of the mouth that will defile you. Paul will look to Israel’s history and point out that although the Hebrews ate angel’s food (manna) they were still defiled from with in and all except two out of 2-3 million died in the wilderness. As Christians we need to be careful and allow ourselves to simply become a religious person. Many people are deceived into thinking that because they can keep traditions and abstain from cretin foods that they are now somehow closer to God. This all comes from a wrong perspective about who our Lord is. Yes the Lord gave the dietary law, (Leviticus 11:11) 1) to protect His people from disease and 2) to show His people that they are not perfect and need a sacrifice. Through the final sacrifice of Jesus the Christ on the cross now through grace and not the law I can be made clean and have access to God. There are those honest followers of the law that say, “I can not do this, I need a Savior.” There are also those dishonest people who have deceived themselves into thinking that they are perfect and think that they do completely keep the law. It is these that the Apostle warns us not to be concerned with. As a follower of Christ, I need to be reminded that I need a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and now I can stand in His righteousness and not my own.
