In marriage and in any interpersonal relationship there is one quality that never builds the relationship up; "selfishness." By definition if you are selfish you are putting yourself above the other person and the relationship, and that's not much of a relationship at all. God calls us to be servant lovers both in marriage and in life. Christ himself did not come to be served but to serve.
